Signs Of Hair Damage

So you are a man and you think you have damaged hair. I bet you are searching for solutions on how you can treat and repair damaged hair.

Hair damage can occur even in men’s hair. How to treat men’s damaged, dry hair easily by following these simple steps.

To treat damaged hair use a leave-in conditioner, shampoo less, and let your hair air dry.  Damaged hair will have less shine, tangle more easily and look frizzy.

Damaged hair (broken hair or split ends) is not exclusively just a condition for men.

Hair damage can be tested. Men can test for damaged hair. Damaged hair can be tested by looking at hair ends and feel for roughness. Damaged hair will have less shine, tangle more easily and look frizzy.” according to Ed.

Damaged hair is not exclusively a man thing, right? In this article I’ll tell you about the causes and simple treatments for damaged hair. The first step is you need to know what to look for to determine if you have damaged hair.

The key point here is to be able to know what does damaged hair looks like. And then you can select the right

solution for your problem. Also keep in mind there are many ways to fix damaged hair on men but they just really cover up the problem, however some of them do a fantastic job at covering it up. they can make it look like you do not have broken hair or split ends. Notice I said look like.

Stacey, our in-house hair analyst says, “It’s relative easy to identify damaged hair. The key is to identify damaged hair as quickly as possible and stop what is causing the damage to avoid it spreading to all of your hair.“

Did you know Keratin is the protein that protects epithelial cells against hair damage or stress?

Would you like to know about combing (wet hair) your hair in the shower and if this cause damage to your hair? Did you know you could be damaging your hair and not know it.

1. Rough texture

Men’s hair can break while styling. It may even break just by running your fingers through your hair. Here, the tensile strength is weakened because of cuticle damage. Your hair will lose its strength greatly if the outer layer is damaged. Hair will feel rough to the touch.

2. Dull looking hair with not much shine

Most likely when your hair has no shine the hair cuticles are damaged. The cuticle is the outer protective layer for your hair. Sometimes there is no shine even after applying a deep conditioner. This is a good clue that you have cuticle damage. If a pomade is too strong for you, you could also try a styling cream with silicone.

3. Split ends

Run your fingers through your hair and inspect the ends for damage. If they look rough and stick out, or look split then you have damage. Eating a may also help you avoid micronutrient deficiencies, which can hurt your hair’s overall health. If you have long hair you should stay away from high buns and ponytails because they can damage your hair by putting too much stress on the same section of your hair every day.

4. Hot spots in hair from too much heat

Hair dryers can heat your hair fast. and overuse or too much heat in one spot can cause hot spots in your hair. Always keep the hair dryer moving and use a heat protectant spray. Be careful not to overuse your hair dryer. Also, during Summer months use a heat protectant while swimming and outdoors. Hair will feel rough not only at the ends but toward the middle too. Hot spots can occur anywhere along your hair shaft.

Use a blow dryer or other hot tool to style your hair only on the lowest heat setting. According to the National Library of Medicine, “Hair dryers are commonly used and can cause hair damage such as roughness, dryness and loss of hair color.

5. Lack of moisture

In this case, it seems no matter what products men try hair seems to always looks dry. The hair cuticle could be damaged and unable to hold in moisture. Hair will look dry and will feel rough to the touch. Sometimes, having dry hair is a signal of an underlying health condition like malnutrition, thyroid or parathyroid issues, or a lack of specific nutrients in your diet.

According to the May Clinic, “diet is a major factor in the condition of your hair“.

Dry hair can be causes by a variety of reasons, such as over-shampooing with hot water, styling with alcohol-based products, and excessive sun exposure. Men’s grooming products are known to contain chemicals that can cause hair to dry out.

6. Hair breakage

Men’s frizzy hair is caused by the hair shaft being lifted due to chemical treatments, like coloring and the cuticle has been permanently lifted thus allowing moisture to be collected making the hair swell and look frizzy and can break.

7. Too much chemicals hair porosity

Chemical dyes are your hair’s enemy. Too much coloring can lead to your hair being too pooris and your hair cuticle not laying down. This makes your hair feel rough, dull looking and definitely not shiny and or smooth.

8. Way too many tangles all the time

If you find your hair is getting tangled all the time you may have damage. The reason is that the outer layer of the hair shaft is not smooth and as a result, they catch each other and tend to get tangled. This makes it very hard to detangle.

9. No elasticity

In this case men’s hair has no or very little elasticity, like when you have too much hair spray. It can not stretch and ends up snapping.

How Do Men Repair Damaged Hair?

Signs Of Hair Damage - HairBrushy
How To Repair Men’s Damaged Hair - HairBrushy

According to Meesh, “Here are proven techniques men can use to treat hair damage“:

The first key solution is to identity damage as soon as you can. Once damage is done and its is really bad, like split ends, then the only real remedy is to trim off the damaged ends. What you can try is to get a hair cut in layers instead of getting a full cut. This way you might be able to get rid of just the damaged part. Get your hair is cut with a real sharp scissors giving you a nice clean cut. Now your hair has the chance to grow back out healthy. The following tips can help:

1. Use Leave In Conditioners

One of the best and easiest ways to treat damaged hair is to add back moisture by using a leave in conditioner. But I like to go a step farther and get the most bang for my buck by looking for products that can be used not only as a leave in conditioner but also a heat protectant. That is why I highly recommend Redken One United All-In-One Leave-In Conditioner because it’s more than just a heat protectant, it’s a leave in conditioner too.

If you have thin hair and find that conditioner weighs it down too much, make sure to only put conditioner on the tips of your damp hair and not on your scalp. There’s nothing wrong with using hair gels, waxes, or even hairspray to get the style and look you want just apply to the ends and not your scalp.

2. Use Cold Water

Using cold or not really hot water can save your hair. By using cooler water you are helping your hair retain moisture. If your hair damage is a result of your grooming routine, you can do a few things to help, like applying a hair mask, looking for better shampoos, massaging with nourishing oils, and altering grooming habits.

3. Let Hair Air Dry

Air drying your hair is the best. By air drying you completely avoid potentially damaging heat that can dry out your hair instantly. But if you must blow dry your hair be sure to use a heat protectant. I highly recommend Redken One United All-In-One Leave-In Conditioner because it’s more than just a heat protectant, it’s a leave in conditioner too. Do not vigorously rub with a cotton towel. Cotton micro fibers can catch your hair and pull it out or cause it to snap. If you have to use heat then try to use the lowest heat setting you can to set your style. Avoid excessive heat and styling tools. Heat is an enemy to your hair and can easily damage your cuticle. But if you have to have heat make sure to use a good heat protectant spray.

4. Shampoo Less

The more you shampoo the more you strip away you scalp’s natural oils in which aids in adding vital moisture to your hair. Don’t be fooled by some shampoos just because they are sulfate free or plant based. Some are very strong and will strip your hair clean in no time. To give you an example, I once used a plant based shampoo and found the longer I left it on my hair the more it stripped off my natural oils. I finally figured out I only needed to leave the shampoo on for about a minute. That is how well it worked.

Stay away from shampoos that use sulfate and other harsh chemicals. Look for natural products. If you are reading the ingredients and there are a lot of long hard to pronounce word then look for another product. Most really harsh shampoos with chemicals strip way all your hair’s natural oils leaving your hair dry. Another way to strip all the moisture out is to over shampoo. so be careful to only shampoo as needed.

Use natural ingredients like coconut oil. Coconut oil is high in fatty acids that help form a protective layer or barrier around the cuticle. Oils like castor oil is high in protein and can help fill in the damaged spots.

5. Use A Proven Split End Hair Repair Product

You can’t really repair split ends but there are great products that can make it look lie you have no split ends. One of my favorite is Olaplex Hair Perfector No 3 Repairing Treatment. Overall a very good product in which I highly recommend if you have split ends. It basically works by bonding the ends and it looks and feels so much better, like you have no split ends. It’s worth a try is you are not interested in getting a hair cut.

Protect you hair while doing regular activities like swimming. Make sure to use a swim cap and condition your hair before you swim. Conditioning your hair with coconut oil for example forms a protective layer around the cuticle thus helps protect your hair from chemical in the pool.

6. Use A Boar Brush

If you are one of those who does not want to use products, well that is OK. You can go about it the old fashion way by brushing your hair with a high quality boar brush. This will stimulate your scalp and help distribute your scalps own natural oils all along the hair shaft. This will make your hair shiny and help hydration.

7. Use A Wide Tooth Comb

Wide tooth combs or combs in general are great for evenly distributing conditioner through your hair. In addition, they have wide teeth (or less teeth than brushes) spaced far apart so they are gentle on your hair. But make your selection carefully because many cheaper plastic combs have sharp edges that can snag your hair. In my opinion it’s work a few extra dollars to get a good one.

8. Diet – Eat Well

Last but probably one of the most important is to live a healthy life style. Eat a balanced diet and try to keep your stress level to a minimum. Engage in regular exercise and make sure you are getting all the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs. If in doubt get a check up.

Believe it or not your diet plays an important part in hair health. By having a good balanced diet will go a long way in keeping your hair strong and healthy. By making sure you are eating essential fatty acids like omega-3s plays a key role in the health of your skin, nails and hair.

9. Stop Or Reduce Hair Coloring

Avoid coloring your hair. Chemicals are bad for your hair due to it makes your hair do things it was not originally made to do. Strong chemicals make your hair swell so that the dye can penetrate your outer layer or cuticle to reach the inner core. And as a result your hair never fully recovers. So the best thing is not to do it, but if you have to then use an ammonia free product and be sure to condition your hair before and after. Use a good deep conditioner. A deep conditioner have more concentrated amount of ingredients that generally does not wash off as easily as a regular daily conditioner. Therefore it stays on your hair longer.

My #1 Choice To Cover Up Hair Damage

Why? Because it works. It’s my top choice for covering up split end damage. Yes, it works, repairs damaged hair and broken bonds. Gives your hair a healthy appearance.

It makes your hair look like there is no split end damage, but it will not stop further damage. You do that by changing your habits. If you have ruined your hair by beaching or otherwise, I would definitely give this product a try. It may work for you. Notice I say it may work. I am not claiming this product works miracles. I do not know what your hair has gone through.

Before using this product or any split end repair product, I highly suggest you test it on a small section of your hair first. 99% of the time, the best solution is to get a haircut to eliminate split ends and keep them from splitting up the hair shaft. But you may do a repair and this is one of the best products I am aware of that really works. So I say try it before you use more drastic measures.

I have done all the work for you by rounding up some of the best over the counter products to help with dry and damaged hair. Some of these products may be marketed directly to females but trust me your hair can’t tell the difference. Plus who cares if it works, right!

I looked for products that helps fight men’s dry and damaged hair, reduces frizz, tames really wild hair, soothes the scalp and provides nourishment and moisture while adding shine. These products are Shampoos, Leave in Conditioners, Deep Conditioners and Protectants. You might be interested in reading my article called: Does damaged hair grow back healthy? Learn more about what is really possible.

One of my favorite is PURA D’OR organic moroccan argan oils to promote healthy shiny hair. Did you know that another popular oil is coconut oil. People apply coconut oil to make their hair appear shiny and healthy.

Remember your hair is dead. So there is nothing you can do to make it grow back together. The hair shaft is dead, so split ends for example can’t grow back together again. But there are products that can help or make it look like you have less damage. And there are things you can do to prevent damage in the first place. You should read my article called: Broken hair on top of head Can you stop it and what are some common causes?

1. Dove Men+Care 2 in 1

Before you purchase this product you need to like menthol. The menthol in this shampoo really wakes you up. You can feel the menthol on your scalp as you shampoo. The added caffeine tightens up your skin.

The reason why I like it is because it’s an energizing blend of caffeine and menthol shampoo and conditioner that helps hair grow thicker, stronger, and more resilient. It’s like a one stop shop that wakes you up and conditions your hair. It’s quick and easy to use and you only need one product not separate shampoos and conditioners. And lastly it’s at a good price for those wanting to save.

Why put caffeine in shampoo? Caffeine is added to shampoo to increase blood circulation in your scalp. This is thought to boost hair growth by stimulating hair follicles. The caffeine is in a power form when added to the shampoo and is thought to make your hair grow even faster. The only downside is that in some folks too much caffeine can have an opposite effect by causing irritation. Skin irritation, eye irritation and even irritation to your hair follicles can actually have the opposite effect on hair growth. So if it irritates you then stop using.

2. Head and Shoulders for Men

I like it because it’s a very convenient to use a 2 in 1 shampoo. Contains a charcoal extract which is nice at this price.

The charcoal has natural abilities to clear away toxins and draw out the dirt and oils from your hair and scalp. It purifies and restores your scalp while nourishing your hair. It’s another product that is quick and easy and at a good price.

3. V76 by Vaughn Hydrating Shampoo

The Sage leaf extract nourishes the scalp and strengthens your hair but has a fragrance. you are either going to like it or or not. Some folks just don’t like it. I happen to like the smell and do not think it’s overpowering. But that’s my opinion. you Don’t really need a a lot to do the job. Just a quarter sized amount in the palm of your hand should work nicely. The reason why I like it is because of the smell. Also contain vitamin E which is an antioxidant.

The product clams to contains no parabens or sulfates. It’s also a vegan or vegetarian product. Not that I am going to eat it, but this fact may be important for some folks.

Did you know? Parabens is commonly used in a lot of health and beauty products mainly as a preservatives. It’s in shampoos, toothpaste, deodorants and the list goes on. It also goes by other names such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben. All these ingredients contains parabens.

The greatest concern is that parabens are known to disrupt hormone function, an effect that is linked to increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity,” reports the non-profit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC).

V76 by Vaughn hydrating shampoo is a little more expensive but you know your are getting a quality product and not being exposed to harsh chemicals or preservatives. Plus like I mentioned before I think it has a great scent so that’s why I recommend it.

4. American Crew American Crew

This is another product that has a great smell and uses Sage leaf extract. The Sage leaf adds shine to your hair and softens the skin. American Crew uses dimethicone to detangle and condition your hair. This also hydrates your skin. This product is a 3 in 1, Shampoo, body wash and conditioner. This keeps things super simple. All you need is one bottle. Now there are are a lot of good things to say about dimethicone but there are also some not so good. For some it may cause eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation. But in other studies it seems to help with dermatitis.

Why Dimethicone is Bad for Your Skin? The Truth Behind The Common Cosmetics Ingredient, Dimethicone,by Britta Aragon

That artificial coating on the outside of skin causes several issues:

  • It traps everything under it including bacteria, sebum, and impurities which could lead to increased breakouts and blackheads
  • The coating action actually prevents the skin from performing its normal activities like sweating, temperature regulating, sloughing off dead skin cells, etc.
  • Prolonged exposure to dimethicone can actually increase skin irritation, due to the coating property and because dimethicone is listed as a possible skin and eye irritant
  • Those with sensitive or reactive skin are at risk of an allergic reaction to dimethicone
  • On top of all this, dimethicone is a non-biodegradable chemical—bad for the environment The Truth Behind The Common Cosmetics Ingredient, Dimethicone

I have no problems using the product. It’s very convenient being a 3-in-1 and does a great job. This one where you will have to try and see if the dimethicone bothers you. Many people will say that you are better off using natural ingredients rather than man-made ingredients to clean with. I recommend it because I think this is a great travel product. I only need to take one bottle to wash, shampoo and condition.

5. Head and Shoulders Shampoo Royal Oils Collection

I like it because it’s free of parabens and dyes and conditions and adds moisture to your hair. Don’t be fooled by the anti dandruff label.

This is also a great shampoo for those who do not have dandruff. The product gives you a lightweight, long-lasting hydration thus is a more balanced, moisturizing formula so it’s not going to weigh down your hair. But on the other hand if you have an extreme problem with dry hair you may need to use a more concentrated (heavy) product.

6. Every Man Jack Daily

Here is why I love this product and I am willing to pay more. Actually I did pay more because this is what I use. It’s made naturally, they strive to use as many naturally derived and plant-based ingredients as possible, while still delivering exceptional performance. The product claims to contain no parabens, no phthalates, no dyes and no GMOs. Plus is made in the USA and is certified Cruelty Free by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Organization (PETA) and are never tested on animals. Now all that being said this product does contain Sodium Laurylglucosides.

Did you know: The trend of formulating without sulfates in the personal care industry has been present for almost a decade and has not decreased in popularity since its emergence. As a result, formulators are now requesting alternatives to the popular sulfates sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) from their raw material suppliers in order to meet the demands of consumers. Sodium Laurylglucosides Hydroxypropyl Sulfonate for Sulfate-free Formulations by Robert J. Coots, PhD

I happen to think it’s a much milder, and much less harsh than a straight up sulfate. I have no problems using this product. The glycerin and shea butter will condition and soften your hair. I happen to like the Sandalwood scent the best.

7. Tea Tree Oil

The reason I like this shampoo is NOT for it’s anti dandruff claims and Tea Tree oil but for it’s Lavender and Argan oils. The Lavender smells so good and the Argan oils infuse hydration while strengthening hair. I am not sure of the Tea Tree oil and it’s ability to cure dandruff, anyway this article is not about dandruff. I think Tea Tree oil makes a good hand sanitizer. I think you’ll like this product because it does a great job of shampooing your hair and providing back some of the moisture your hair as lost and it’s sulfate free, paraben free, cruelty free and made in the USA.

8. WOW Apple Cider Vinegar

Why I like it is because it contains virgin coconut and avocado oils to rejuvenate weak or damaged hair. The formulation of both oils replenish lost nutrition that’s vital in keeping your hair strong. The coconut avocado hair conditioner is powered by botanical extracts and oils with nourishing properties. It works by balancing pH levels in weak or damaged hair.

The interesting ingredient in this product is Saw Palmetto Extract. I am not recommending it because of it but just wanted to make note it’s included. There are some studies that showed positive results for men hair loss treatment using Saw Palmetto. Saw palmetto is a small palm tree native to the southeastern United States. Its fruit was used medicinally by the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

9. Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask

The reason I recommend this product is it’s a professional salon treatment that transforms the texture of your hair. It also repairs, restores, and strengthens weak, damaged, and over-processed hair. It give your hair a healthy look. They claim to use the highest quality cosmetic grade Argan oil. It also Sulfate and Paraben Free. So now you may be asking what is the difference between cosmetic grade Argan oil and regular Argan oil. The cosmetic grade is press where the regular Aragn oil is roasted. The result is the pressed is more potent.

10. Aveda Men Pure-Formance Shampoo

What makes Aveda Men Pure-Formance unique is that it’s made with 100% percent naturally derived exfoliate walnut shells and jojoba beads. This formula works to help create a smoother, healthier-looking and feeling scalp.

If you order it online it comes in a rather big bottle, 33.8 OZ so it’s rather awkward to handle especially with one hand. But on the positive side the big bottle will last almost a year. The key is not to load up your hand but to only use a small amount. Unless you have have hair like a Lion all you need is the size of a Nickel in the palm of your hand.

Exfoliation can help your scalp. The idea behind using walnut shells is that the ultra fine walnut shells exfoliate dead surface skin cells without irritation. The jojoba beads also act as a gentle exfoliate. Exfoliation done regularly has many benefits:

  1. It can help clear and clean the scalp
  2. It can improve your skin texture
  3. It can clear the way for moisturizers and other hair-care products to reach your scalp

Did you know? Exfoliants (or abrasives) are compounds able to slough away the top layer of dead epidermis cells of the skin, thereby leaving the skin appear smoother, fresher and less wrinkled (peelings). The result of exfoliation is to promote blood circulation in the skin and to increase the turnover of surface skin cells. Exfoliation can be achieved either mechanically by scrubbing the skin with cleansers containing small, hard particles (scrubs) or also chemically by applying cleansers containing active ingredients with a peeling effect (e.g. alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids and others). 11. HSI PROFESSIONAL Argan Oil Heat Protector

The reason I put this on the list is because if you do a lot of blow drying or styling with heat you need a good heat protector and HSI works very well. It’s going to protect your hair from heat exposure up to 450º F. and uses Argan oil. Argan oil is light weight so it’s not going to weigh down your hair. No sticky mess or straw-like hair.

I love this product because it can also be used as a leave in conditioner. This product will help you with getting that smooth, hydrated, frizz-free hair that looks healthier than ever before. Plus is made in the USA and is not tested on animals.

I like this product because it uses what I think is an effective plant-based formula. It’s a blend that claims is clinically proven and tested to reduce hair thinning by promoting hair strength and thickness along with increased volume and reduced breakage. When I read the list of ingredients each ingredient looks to be derived from a natural source.

13. Jack Black – Nourishing Hair and Scalp Conditioner

Jack Black is a premium product so it is going to cost more than some of the more popular over the counter brands. But the good thing is that a small amount goes a long way in helping repair your hair. The best way to use this product is to put it on and then leave it on for a while, don’t wash it off immediately. Give the product time to do it’s work on your hair and scalp.

Jack Black is loaded with proteins, vitamins, and natural oils that work together to help reduce your itchy, dry scalp. The B5 vitamins are included and they help to retain moisture and thicken your hair. this gives added shine and volume to your hair. Biotin is an AB complex vitamin that is known to thicken and strengthen hair.

Did you know? Biotin, also called vitamin H (the H represents Haar und Haut, German words for “hair and skin”) or vitamin B7, is a water-soluble B vitamin. It is involved in a wide range of metabolic processes, both in humans and in other organisms, primarily related to the utilization of fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids. Wikipedia

I like Jack Black because it’s free of synthetic fragrances, colorants, and parabens. And in my opinion because of that fact it reduces the chances of it irritating your scalp.

14. Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser

Like I mentioned previously in this article nothing is going to mend your split ends but I believe this product will help. After using it leaves you hair soft not stiff and straw-like so that’s good. I have not seen this product around in stores so the only way to purchase may be to order online.

The key ingredient in this product looks to be phyto-keratin complex. And just so happens that your hair is made up of over 80% keratin. Keratin is in the family of proteins. The phyto part is the plant based version of keratin. So what we are talking about here is the use of a plant-based protein material. And just so happens that the most common suppliers of phyto-keratin are soy, wheat and corn. These natural ingredients are usually hydrolized before they are used.

The big benefit is that the phyto-keratin complex is to penetrate your hair and help retain moisture.

15. Peter Thomas Roth Mega Rich Shampoo

This is a luxury product but a little goes a long way. You can expect 8 oz to last a little longer than one month if you are not using too much. A dab in the palm of you hand is all you need if you have short hair. If you have longer hair then you are going to need more and 8 oz is not going to last one month.

This product uses a vitamin-infused shampoo to help nourish and give you a healthy looking head of hair. It’s designed to be use in conjunction with the Mega-Rich conditioner. It leaves your hair soft and smooth. It uses Biotin B-7, vitamins C, E and B5.

16. It’s a 10 Haircare Miracle

It’s a simple easy to use spray, just spay on and leave in, there is no reason to rinse out. If you are out in the sun a lot then you most likely are going to need UV protection. It’s a 10 Hair-care contains Aloe Vera which is a moisture-based sealer and a natural sunscreen. Just wash your hair as normal and then apply It’s a 10 Hair-care. It’s as simple as that. This is probably one of the best leave in products on the market. If you have naturally oily hair you can skip the conditioner and use this instead.

ProsCons

17. Lab Series Lab Series

It’s a good all-around shampoo that leaves your hair looking much fuller and shiny. It is on the expensive side but a little goes a long way. You can expect to get about a months use out of a 6.7 oz tube but you need to really watch how much your use. Start out with a very small amount in the palm of your hand and work in more as needed. Just remember you can always add in more.

This is a Ginseng-enriched shampoo. If you look at the ingredients it says this product contains ginseng root extract.

Did you know? Ginseng has been used for improving overall health. It has also been used to strengthen the immune system and help fight off stress and disease. There are different types of ginseng. Asian ginseng (from Chinese and Korean sources) has been used for unclear thinking, diabetes, and male erectile dysfunction. American ginseng has been used for diabetes and for reducing the risk of the common cold and flu. Siberian ginseng has been used for reducing the risk of colds and flu. WebMD

18. COLOR WOW Dream Coat Supernatural Spray

The big benefit of this product is it’s ability to help moisture proof your hair. This then helps with frizz. So if you have a lot of frizz this is the go to product that can help. Dream coat covers each hair strand with an invisible waterproofing cloak that will last for up to 2 to 3 shampoos.

So if you hair is over-processed, maybe too much coloring going on and you have the case of the frizz this product can help tame the Lions head. As you well now color chemicals can make your hair more porous by degrading the tight outer cuticle layer of your hair. This allows moisture to penetrate your hair and as a result your hair frizzes. Dream Coat covers each hair strand with an invisible waterproofing coating that works as a heat-activated polymer works to compress, tighten and seal hair strands. This is a premium product and is expensive but it can last up to 3 shampooing.

19. Burt’s Bees Avocado Butter Hair Treatment

This is possibly the shortest list of ingredients for a hair-care product I’ve ever seen. It’s mainly consists of natural ingredients. The Avocado will give your hair the needed moisture while Olive and Almond Oil, Rosemary and Nettle Extracts help give your hair a beautifully glossy shine.

Please note, nothing will cure split-ends. You can cover it up, make it look better but you will still have split-ends. You can get a hair cut and that will cure it. With that being said there are products that can help cover it up. So don’t expect a miracle when making a purchase.

Ingredients:
glycerin, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, avena sativa (oat) kernel protein, persea gratissima (avocado) oil, prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, lanolin, tocopherol, urtica dioica (nettle) leaf powder, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) powder, chlorophyll, fragrance.

Burt’s Bees Avocado Butter Hair Treatment Pros and Cons

ProsCons
Can be used to tame frizz and curlsPrice @ $5.34 Per Fl Oz
Avocado, Olive & Almond Oil, Rosemary & Nettle oils
Sulfate-free
No phthalates, parabens, petrolatum or SLS

20. Olaplex Hair Perfector No 3

This not your ordinary at home hair conditioner. This is a concentrated treatment that strengthens the hair from within, reducing breakage and improving look and feel. You must start with clean hair. Do a comb through and then apply Olaplex and let it do it’s work for 10 minutes. The manufacture says the longer you can leave it in the better, not sure how long is long. I would go by their recommendation of 10 minutes.

As with any new hair car product the best way to use the product is to first test it. Take a small section of you hair and try the product. This way if the product ends up damaging your hair for some strange reason you do not end up ruining your entire head of hair. The worst thing you can do is to cover all your hair with a new product you have no experience with.

Olaplex Hair Perfector No 3 Repairing Treatment Pros and Cons

ProsCons
Cruelty-freePrice @ $8.48 Per Fl Oz
Nut free
Phosphate free
Paraben free
PH balanced

21. Hairgenics Pronexa Hair Bonder Bond Repairing

If you have gone through many harsh chemical or heat treatments then this product may be for you. In many cases, Pronexa Bond Repair will help strengthen and condition your hair to a level greater than what you currently have. The manufacture suggests you leave it on your hair for at least 15 minutes before washing out. In addition it can even be left on overnight for very damaged hair.

What I like about it is that it’s cruelty free, paraben, sulfate and phthalate free. It is made in the USA. This will not get rid of your split ends but will help and possibly keep your hair from further damage.

Hairgenics Pronexa Hair Bonder Bond Repairing Complex Pros and Cons

ProsCons
Paraben-freePrice @ $6.25 Per Fl Oz
Sulfate-free and phthalate-free
Made in the USA
Cruelty free
Contains Castor Oil, Retinol, Vitamin B5, silk proteins

Conclusion For Damaged Hair

So by reading this article you realized that dry and brittle hair is common in men and women of all ages. In truth, dry hair doesn’t differ between men and women. A few simple tweaks and products that I already mentioned when added to your hair care routine should alleviate dryness.

Men who have outside professions are more likely to experience dry hair. Excessive sun exposure damage the cuticle of your hair. The cuticle is your hair’s natural protection mechanism and helps to lock the moisture in your hair. But once your cuticle is compromised, your hair becomes prone to dryness, dullness and breakage.

Did you know, sebaceous glands in your hair follicles create a natural oil called sebum that moisturizes and protects your hair. As you age, your body generates less sebum, and your hair becomes more prone to dryness.

It’s a fact, men with curly or coily hair are especially prone to dry hair. This is because the sebum isn’t able to reach the ends of the hair as easily as it can in straight or wavy hair.

There are hundreds of shampoos and hair-care product on the market today with  anew ones being created as you read this article. You never know how some of these products will react on your hair.

The best advise I can give you is not to jump in and use the product all over your head but to first do a hair strand test. Apply a small amount to a small part of your head or hair and see the results. Proceed slowly and carefully and gradually apply more and to a larger area as you see fit.

All prices and ingredients listed in this article are accurate as of the original posting date. Please be sure to visit the manufactures website to get the latest product information. Some of these products are manufactured in foreign countries. As with all products you should carefully read the list of ingredients before purchase. Some of the ingredients may not agree with you or you may not agree with their testing. Also consider seeing a licensed master stylist.
