Paddle brush

Paddle brush

Paddle brushes are commonly used for styling hair fast and lots of hair. Due to it's larger head it has the capacity for more bristles and therefore with each brush stroke it can cover more hair. If you have lots of hair you need a paddle brush.

Why you should use a paddle brush

Generally speaking a paddle brush can cover approximately 25% more hair as compared to a regular oval brush. So the end result is you are finished 25% sooner. It's ideal for all styles of hair (notably longer and thicker hair) and good for tangles, smoothing and defrizzing. You can also use it with your hair dryer to speed drying time and add some additional volume and fill. To know more about paddle brushes and detangling hair you should read my article called is the wet brush good for your hair. The Wet Brush makes several types of brushes and one is a paddle detangler. This article goes over how to brush wet hair and want are the best products to use to prevent damage. In addition, another popular questions that is asked Is The Wet Brush Good For Curly Hair? As you know curly hair can be difficult to handle and style so in this article I go into a little more detail.

DeVille Boar Paddle

Paddle brushes are great for people who have lots and lots of hair. It shapes your hair but generally does not do well for adding volume or curls. There are better brush types for that. If you have thin hair then you can benefit from a paddle brush with lots of bristles. The more dense the bristles the better tension and control you will have while styling. If you are interested in other brush types then you will want to read a great article I wrote describing the different brushes, click here: What Different Hair Brushes Are Used For.

Advantages of a paddle brush

  1. Covers more hair, about 25% more with each brush stroke
  2. Can be used for any hair type depending on the bristle type
  3. Great for straight hair
  4. Great for smoothing and defrizzing hair
  5. Great for adding volume
  6. Great for blow drying

Disadvantages of a paddle brush

  1. Most are large, so not ideal for travel
  2. Not ideal for adding curls and waves
  3. Not ideal for short hair
  4. Not ideal for people who don't have lots of hair

Paddle brushes come in many types for use in most all conditions. For example, you can get ball-tipped bristles for detangling, boar bristles for adding shine and conditioning hair, a boar and nylon combination and even a vented paddle for speed drying hair.

What to look for in a quality paddle brush

Many of us think very hard about hair care in order to find the best products for our hair type. But how many of us have actually chosen a hairbrush in the same way? Just think of all the money you spend on hair care products like shampoos and conditioners through out the year. I bet this adds up to $100 or so. It make since then to spend some money on a quality brush that will last for years, right?

The Wet Brush Flex Dry Paddle

Don't be fooled into thinking every brush does exactly the same in the beauty aisle, this is not the case at all. I say it's one of the best things you can do for yourself is to choose the right hairbrush. I wrote an excellent article called why are boar bristle brushes expensive. You should read this if you are interested in knowing more 18 of the top reasonably priced quality brushes.

  1. QUALITY CONSTRUCTION: You want a paddle brush crafted from durable and premium quality material. Material that can take the heat from a hair dryer. Keep in mind there is no way a $5.00 brush is going to have the same fit and finish as a higher dollar brush. There are going to be places on the brush where it's not smooth and you are going to see imperfections. These are all places where your hair can get caught and pulled out or damaged.
  2. ONE PIECE HANDLE: Uniquely designed one piece handle that won't break. If you have long hair and you put tension on the handle while brushing you can easily snap a two piece cheap plastic handle.
  3. BALL TIPPED: Ball-tipped, heat and chemical resistant brush with a non-slip handle. The ball-tipped ends help protect your scalp from damage. Look for balls that are smooth and will not catch your hair. Most detangle brushes are going to be ball-tipped like The Wet Brush. I wrote an excellent article comparing The Wet Bush to a comb. If you are interested click here: Does The Wet Brush Work On Dry Hair?
  4. DOES NOT SMELL: You do not want a brush that smells of chemicals. Many cheaper brushes sometimes have a heavy chemical smell. I believe this has to due with where they are manufactured, as some countries do not have strict environmental constrains and allow for a greater latitude in the manufacturing process.
  5. COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Germany makes excellent brushes, as does England. These are the countries that have an excellent reputation for making very high quality brushes. You may end up paying more but you get consistent quality. Meaning if you choose to buy a brush 5 or 6 years later from the same company you will most likely get the same high quality brush.
  6. PRICE: Handmade brushes can cost 2-3x the price of a machine-made brush, but will last longer. If it's a boar brush then a handmade brush will lose fewer bristles over time. Always buy from trusted well know manufactures.

Round Brush

Round brush

A round brush is generally used on long hair but can be used on short hair provided you use the right diameter brush. Read my article what size round to use on short hair, increasing volume using a round brush for short hair and what round brush to use if you have thick hair for more information. These brushes are used under your hair to increase volume and add waves or curls. The more bristles the more tension you can put on your hair while styling. Round brushes are excellent to incorporate bounces, curves or waves. The round brush diameter is important in terms of results and the style which you can achieve. You can read my article in round brush diameters and sizes if you want to know more.

What diameter is best?

Round brushes come in many sizes but the main thing to remember is the shorter the hair you have the smaller diameter brush you will want. This is because you will need the small size to be able to work with the length of hair you have to get enough tension for styling. Generally speaking the larger diameters are going to excel at giving you waves and curls while styling. Read more see best brush for fine hair blowout and best brush for long fine hair blowout.

Round brush size guidelines:
  1. 17mm or 1/2 to 3/4 = very short hair, ear length
  2. 23mm or 3/4 to 1 = short hair, above chin
  3. 32mm or 1 to 1.5 = shoulder length
  4. 43mm or 1.5 to 2 = beyond shoulder

What kind of bristles are best?

Round brushes can have bristles made of boar, nylon or both. Nicole Contrastano, hairstylist at Pierre Michel Salon, recommends a round brush with boar bristles. I believe you get much better hair tension with boar. And, my personal choice is brushes that have one piece wooden handles due to they are less prone to break as compared to two piece plastic handles.

Round brush advantages

100% natural boar bristle brushes creates the perfect tension for getting lift and bounce at the root. It also is great for creating a smooth clean and natural shine with every brush. Boar bristles distribute your natural oils from your roots down the hair shaft. This the best natural conditioner you can use. Boar bristles can also stimulate your scalp and thus increasing blood flow with every use. For more red my article benefits of brushing and boar bristles for men.

How to use a round brush?

By starting at the root of your hair you can increase lift and volume quickly. This also has the extra benefit of not having to use a great deal of styling product. a round brush can create texture and movement throughout the hair by curling and waving each section by wrapping then around the brush, heating the hair then cooling it back down to set the curl.

Vent brush

Vent brush

A vented brush is primarily used to help or aid in drying your hair. It is also used as a styling tool. It's great because the bristle count is very low as compared to other brushes thus allows your hair dryer to dry your hair faster. Most vented brushes have just enough bristles to provide tension for light styling and volumizing .

How NOT to use a vented brush

Many people use a vent brush right after they get out of the shower. I believe this is not optimal due to wet hair is at it's weakest point. It's better to wait until you hair is at least 80% dry then finish it off with a vent brush and hair dryer.

Also, I have seen many people use a vent brush as a detangler. Although it can be used to detangle hair and depending on your hair type it can work, there are better options available.

For short hair, using a vented brush to detangle would most likely work just fine, but for longer hair I would recommend a Wet Brush Original Detangler or a Tangle Teezer. Tangel Teezer makes diffident types of brushes depending on your hair type. For example, Tangle Teezer has one specifically for thick and curly hair and another to detangle thin or fine hair. These options are much better, faster and less prone to damage your hair while detangling.

How to use a vented brush

If you are in a rush in the mornings then you have no choice but to use it on wet hair. In this case make sure you use a good leave in conditioner to help the brush glide through your hair without pulling and stretching your hair. Then proceed slowly and gently. This method reduces the potential for damaging your hair.

  1. Apply a leave in conditioner to wet hair and gently brush through.
  2. If you have longer hair, work in sections and start blow drying at the root.
  3. Keep the hair dryer at a slight distance, there is no need to press the nozzle against the bristles.
  4. For longer hair make sure your ends are protected with a heat protectant.
  5. Over direct and under direct the blow dryer to get the desired volume and lift for your style.
  6. For added lift for men, finger tousle your hair. For women Velcro rollers can be used to provide extra lift and volume.

Advantages of using a vented brush

  1. AIR CIRCULATION: Vented brushes have specially located air vents to help circulate air at the root  of your hair and is designed to be used with a hairdryer.
  2. SCALP PROTECTION: Most vented brushes features ball ends on tips that protect the scalp and are kind to your hair.
  3. LIGHTWEIGHT GRIP And CONTROL: Most vented brushes are very lightweight and provide a comfortable grip while using.

What to look for in a quality vent brush

  1. QUALITY CONSTRUCTION: You want a vent brush crafted from durable and premium quality material. Material that can take the heat from a hair dryer.
  2. ONE PIECE HANDLE: Uniquely designed one piece handle that won't break.
  3. BALL TIPPED: Ball-tipped heat and chemical resistant brush with a non-slip handle.

To prevent damaging your hair use the right tools
To prevent damaging your hair use the right tools

Do not use a boar bristle brush to detangle your hair. The bristles are too close together and you will end up ripping your hair out. Instead use a good brush like the The Wet brush. The Wet brush is specifically designed to detangle hair. Knowing what I know about The Wet brush, if you do not already have one I would just go out and buy one. You will be glad you did. Another option is to use a wide toothed comb. Revlon, Denman and Cricket make great combs to mention just a few. Read my article called "Should I comb my curly hair in the shower" to learn more.

Using a high quality hair dryer can make a big difference in the quality of the outcome. Plus it can save you time and save your hair in the long run because it will give you precisely the right amount of heat you need to set your style.

Use the right techniques and proper methods to prevent damaging your hair

You should always try to let your hair dry naturally as much a possible before styling. Your hair should be a bout 80% dry before you go into your styling routine. Wet hair is at it's weakest point. You can easily stretch your hair and then it can snap if you choose to comb or brush while your hair is still wet. But if you must comb your hair while wet then at least use a leave-in-conditioner to help slide the comb through without pulling or creating too much tension.

If you have longer hair then always start brushing your hair from the tips and work your way to the roots. If you start at your roots the brush or comb will pull your hair thus creating much more tension. The tension can actually pull out your hair. By staring at the ends you work through the tangles and by the time you reach your roots the comb or brush should glide through much easier. I wrote a great article called "best brush to avoid split ends" you should read for more information.

Cotton towels have micro fibers that can catch your hair and pull it out or create so much tension it causes your hair to snap. Try using an old T-shirt or letting your hair air dry while you do something else for a few minutes. Avoid at all cost vigorously rubbing your hair using a cotton towel.

Coloring and harsh chemicals can damage your hair instantly

Harsh chemicals are everywhere and unfortunately they are included in many products we use every day. But by reading the ingredients you can avoid harsh chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate and others. When looking for a shampoo look for ones with natural ingredients. I am still searching for the perfect shampoo, so if you have any that you sear by please leave a comment. I would love to know more.

Some alcohols are OK, so when reading the list of ingredients just because you see alcohol listed as an ingredient does not mean the shampoo contains hard chemicals.

These are damaging or bad alcohols:
              1. Isopropyl alcohol
              2. Propanol
              3. Propyl alcohol
              4. SD alcohol 40

              These are OK alcohols:
              1. Cetearyl alcohol
              2. Cetyl alcohol
              3. Stearyl alcohol

The damaging alcohols will dry your hair out and make it brittle and susceptible to damage. Please comment below if you know of other hard chemicals.

Protect your hair from damaging UV rays and swimming

When the weather is nice it's time to get outside and have some fun. But this is also a critical time when UV rays can damage your hair. According to the NCBI:

Pro Tip: Excessive sun exposition is the most frequent cause of hair shaft's structural impairment. Photochemical impairment of the hair includes degradation and loss of hair proteins as well as degradation of hair pigment. Hair protein degradation is induced by wavelengths of 254-400 nm. UVB radiation is responsible for hair protein loss and UVA radiation is responsible for color changes.
The bottom line is it's a good idea to use a UV protectant sprays like:

              1. It's a 10 Miracle Leave-In plus Keratin Spray 10 oz - $26.79
              2. HSI PROFESSIONAL Top 5 Heat Hair Protector & Conditioner | Flat Iron & Hot Blow Dry Thermal Guard | With Argan, Coconut, Macadamia, Olive Oil & Vitamins | Made in the USA | 8 Ounce - $12.74

Overdoing it can case hair damage

Many times we just don't realize it that washing your hair too often strips away all your natural oils. Especially when you are using harsh chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate in your shampoo. If you have dry hair or even frizzy hair this could be the reason why. You are just over doing it with shampooing. And the answer is simple just cut back. Maybe you just need a good dry shampoo like:
              1. Dove Refresh+Care Dry Shampoo, Volume & Fullness, 5 Ounce (Pack of 1) - $4.88
              2. Batiste Dry Shampoo, Original Fragrance, 6.73 Fl Oz,Pack of 3 - $14.90
Over-brushing can also damage your hair. By brushing your hair too much you can actually cause split-ends. I'm not sure how many strokes you would need to brush before building up too much friction that would cause split-ends. I'm am guessing if you had healthy hair to begin with you would have to bush it an awful lot to cause any damage. Now on the other hand if you already have damaged hair I am guessing it would take less so it makes more since to cut down.

Deep conditioning treatment can help damaged hair

Consider using a deep conditioning treatment after your shampoo. a deep conditioner is different than your regular conditioner. Often deep conditioners contain more or a more concentrated amount of ingredients needed to repair and protect your hair. If you find you hair is always dry then you can use a deep conditioning treatment more than once a week. For hair that is mildly dry once a month should work just fine.

When in doubt ask your stylist. What you want is a deep conditioning product that also detangles, hydrates, improves manageability giving you a beautiful shine without feeling and looking oily. With most deep conditioners, unlike regular conditioners, you want to leave in you hair for at least 10 minutes. This gives the ingredients time to work. Some deep conditions work even better the longer you leave it in. Here are two that I like:

              1. Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask and Deep Conditioner By Arvazallia for Dry or Damaged Hair - 8.45 Oz - $12.95
              2. Olaplex Hair Perfector No 3 Repairing Treatment, 3.3 Fl Oz - $28.00
              3. Amplixin Hydrating Hair Mask - Deep Conditioner Hair Treatment With Coconut & Argan Oil - Sulfate Free Hair Repair Conditioner For Men & Women With Dry, Damaged Hair, 8Oz - $25.50

High heat can damaged your hair

Let your hair dry as much as possible naturally before picking up your hair dryer. The less heat you have to apply the better. Always start with the lowest heat setting you can possibly get away with to set your style.

Professional hair dryers cost more but they do have benefits above and beyond normal hair dryers. I consider one of the most important features of any hair dryer is the ability to adjust the temperature.

Look for a hair dryer with the ability to regulate the exact amount of heat to set your style. In my opinion have a hair dryer with just an on/off switch is not acceptable.

I like the Sam Villa Light Professional Ionic which has  a built-in ceramic/tourmaline Ion generation which is great at creating shine while reducing static and frizz. the end result is you have a nice smooth and shiny finish. Ionic hair dryers emit negative ions which breaks up water droplets quickly thus allowing your hair to dry much faster. It also leaves your hair looking and feeling much softer and shinier with less heat.

The reason why I like it is because it allows you to turn on/off the Ionic technology. There are times when you do not want or need this feature depending on your hair style and this dryer puts you in control. To learn more about ions be sure to read and watch my video, What do negative ions do for your hair? Also to learn even more read my other article called, Is a ceramic hair dryer better?

And yes it's going to cost a lot more than a cheap blow dryer but You are going to be able to control when you want the ionic generator to be used. You can turn it off and on when needed to suit your style. Really when you think about it how many times do you buy shampoo costing $15.00 per bottle or more per year. You probably spend more on shampoo than you do on a nice styling tool.

              tip on hair dryers
One last tip on hair dryers. Make sure you clean the back filter from dust and debris. This will make your dryer run smoother and last longer. And when cleaning take a good look at the condition to make sure nothing is worn or broken.

Always apply use a good heat protectant before your dry your hair. And here is why. You hair is made up of water and keratin so when you apply heat you are causing the water inside your hair to evaporate and thus changing it natural curl pattern. So by applying heat you have altered the properties of your hair and this can lead to dry, frizzy or even hot spots if you applied too much heat.

By applying a heat protectant you reduce the chance of damaging your hair. The heat protectant forms a barrier between the heat and your hair. The protectant contains ingredients that are called humectants which helps preserve the moisture in your hair.

Most heat protectants also contains other ingredients to help strengthen your hair like antioxidants and oils. The main point to remember is that protectants are not super formulas that once applied can protect your hair from high heat.

They only help reduce the change of damaging your hair. The key word used here is reduce and not prevent. Be sure to read my article Broken hair on top of head to learn more and to see my top 5 protectants.

Does damaged hair grow back healthy

Does damaged hair grow back healthy

A popular question many people who have hair damage might ask is does damaged hair grow back healthy? Can you regrow damaged hair? And the short answer is yes, it does. However, this is not always the case if you are suffering from a medical hair condition. If you damaged your hair by over-styling, too much heat or over coloring with too harsh chemicals the good news is yes your will will grow back healthy. The big question is what to do in the meantime? Keep reading to find answers.

              How to restore damaged hair

              How to restore damaged hair

Before I can talk about restoring damaged hair let's get a better understanding and take a quick look at hair, what is it and is it really made up of dead cells? According to Matthew Hoffman, MD,
hair is made up of keratin.

Keratin is a protein that is the main structural material making up hair, nails and in animals horns, feathers, claws and hooves. So it's not just in humans. And since it's a protein it's not alive. There are no nerve cells in hair. so when you get a hair cut you feel no pain.

Hair has it's roots in the skin. the base of the hair in the skin is alive and is composed of living cells that grow and divide thus building the hair shaft. The root or hair follicle as Dr. Matthew Hoffman says
The hair bulb forms the base of the hair follicle. In the hair bulb, living cells divide and grow to build the hair shaft. Blood vessels nourish the cells in the hair bulb, and deliver hormones that modify hair growth and structure at different times of life.
Now you know hair is dead so there is no magical treatment that is going to make your hair repair itself. One common cause of hair damage is over chemical processing which takes place while coloring your hair. During the coloring process your hair is broken down to allow for the dye to enter. According to Ramona Mulligan, a salon owner in Los Angeles California,
Unfortunately, you really can't undo damage to hair. Once the hair shaft has been broken down with bleach, it can't rebuild itself. You can, however, strengthen it some, and with a good conditioner, temporarily bond the ends together to avoid further breakage. If your hair feels stretchy and gummy when its wet, or is actually breaking off, you are going to have to cut some of that off, if you want your hair to get back to healthy status. Depending on the length, it can take anywhere from 4 months to a year to grow out.

How to make your damaged hair look better?

How to make your damaged hair look better
So there are some things you can do to make damaged hair look better but once you hair is damaged there is no way to really restore it. The best thing to do is let it grow out. Give it time to get healthy and strong. Ramona recommends the following treatment,
Get a deep conditioning and reconstructing treatment as soon as possible, and a shampoo, and conditioner for color treated, damaged hair. Do NOT get a hot oil treatment to use as a reconstruction, and do not get Pantene, etc. for shampoo. If money is an issue, buy some coconut oil as a deep conditioner for now. In addition to that, a leave in conditioner with a heat protectant for after the shower and some Argan oil will be very helpful with building your hair back up. 1-2/week, put the conditioning treatment or coconut oil all over your hair, and wrap it in a bun or an old t shirt and leave it on over night. Try not to shampoo your hair more than 3/week. After shampoo and conditioner, use a leave in conditioner and some Argan oil on the ends.

              1. Deep condition to help with damaged hair

After every shampoo use a deep conditioner like coconut oil. And consider using a leave in conditioner. There are tons of products out there on the market that can help. Here are 2 of my top product recommendations and don't' forget to read my other article "Damaged hair men" for even more ideas to help with damaged hair:
Deep condition to help with damaged hair

Amplixin Hydrating Hair Mask - Deep Conditioner Hair Treatment With Coconut & Argan Oil - Sulfate Free Hair Repair Conditioner For Men & Women With Dry, Damaged Hair, 8Oz - $25.50

Watch the video you might be surprised at what you might learn about Amplixin

The cost is $3.319 per FL Oz. What I like is it contains NO sulfates and parabens which can cause scalp inflammation and in some cases increase hair shedding by suffocating the follicles.

Amplixin hydrating hair mask contains Argan and Coconut oil. Argan and Coconut oil contains vitamin E and fatty acids good for your hair. What I like is both oils help treat split ends and can tame frizzy hair.

I like this product because it's a leave in product that contains phyto-keratin a plant based keratin. The lipids works to strengthen your hair and help prevent further split-ends. It conditions your hair without leaving it oily.

If you can find this product in stores I would advise to buy there instead of ordering online. The reason why is sometimes the cap can come loose and the product can spill out of the bottle during shipment. And at $1.78 per Oz it's not something you want to spill.

What products do you use to deep condition? What do you like about them?

              2. To help with damaged hair use natural products

If you have damaged hair the one thing you don't want is even more damage. So stop using products that could potentially further damage your hair. Stop using harsh chemicals. Many shampoos and conditioners contain sulfates and silicone for example. These ingredients are in most products like laundry detergent to regular hand soap. And you don't need them when there are better natural alternatives available.

Instead of using sulfate look for natural ingredients, sulfate free shampoos. Instead of using silicone look for a silicone free conditioner. The main reason silicone is added to conditioners is to make your hair shine. But after continued use the silicone tends to build up in your hair. For example you could use a product with Coconut oil. The oil will give your hair that shine and from a protective barrier that you want to protect your hair form further damage.

My top 2 favorite shampoo and conditioner products to help with damaged hair
              1. WOW Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo & Hair Conditioner Set - (2 x 16.9 Fl Oz / 500mL) - Increase Gloss, Hydration, Shine - Reduce Itchy Scalp, Dandruff & Frizz - No Parabens or Sulfates - All Hair Types - $29.94
              2. PURA D'OR Original Gold Label Anti-Thinning Shampoo Clinically Tested, Infused with Argan Oil, Biotin & Natural Ingredients, Sulfate Free, All Hair Types, Men and Women, 16 Fl Oz - $29.99
What are your favorite shampoos and conditioners?

              3. Stop using tools that can cause damage to your hair

Many people do not realize you can easily ruin you hair by over-doing-it. Too much heat, too much styling and too much brushing. If you already have damaged hair this is just going to make your problem even worse. By over doing it, you hair can become, frizzy, dull, and limp. The simple answer is to start wearing you hair in a more natural style. And start using hydrating products. Stay away from heat. But if you must use heat then consider using a good heat protectant spray.

My top recommendation for heat protectant and UV protections are
              1. HSI PROFESSIONAL Argan Oil Heat Protector | Protect up to 450º F from Flat Irons & Hot Blow Dry | Sulfate Free, Prevents Damage & Breakage | Made in the USA | 8 Ounce - $14.89
              2. It's a 10 Haircare Miracle Leave-In product, 10 fl. oz. - $23.25
What heat protectant products works for you?

              4. Stop further damage your hair by stopping coloring your hair

Well for some people that is going to be a tall order but if you can, it's worth considering especially when you find out just how damaging it can be. There are some alternatives out there that use natural ingredients like Tea for example. But if you must color your hair then al least look for products that are ammonia free. The down side is that the color sill wash out faster. To read more click on the link, "Broken hair on top of head". In this article I go into more details about ammonia and how coloring actually damages your hair.

How long does it take to repair extremely damaged hair?

How long does it take to repair extremely damaged hair
Hair is going to grow at different rates for different people but the average rate of growth is half an inch per month. So for the average person in 6 months your hair will have grown three inches. And in one year it's now about six inches. This is for the average healthy person who has no medical hair or scalp conditions.

Does cutting off damaged hair help it grow?

Does cutting off damaged hair help it grow
No, cutting your hair has nothing to do with hair growth. Your hair is dead and it's growth is formed in the hair follicle in your skin not at the ends of the hair shaft. Now that being said, if you are suffering from split ends then getting a trim will definitely improve the look of your hair and will help. Once your split ends are cut off your hair will have that healthy appearance again.

Conclusion for growing back damaged hair

Now you know why it's not possible to repair damaged hair. Once your hair is damaged that's it, there is no mending it since it's dead. It will not grow back together if you have split-ends for example. The best option is to get a trim and to cover it up by using treatments.

As you now know is not permanent solution but can get you by till your next trim. The only real solution is to let your hair grow out and protect it from further damage. Your hair should be healthier again in about 6 months. During this time it should have grown about 3 inches in length.

              Damaged hair men

              Damaged hair men

So you are a man and you think you have damaged hair. I bet you are searching for solutions on how you can treat and repair damaged hair. If you are man or women you came to the right place. Damaged hair is not exclusively a man thing, right?  In this article I'll tell you about the causes and simple treatments for damaged hair. The first step is you need to know what to look for to determine if you have damaged hair. And then you can select the right solution for your problem.

How can men identify damaged hair?

It's relative easy to identify damaged hair. The key is to identify damaged hair as quickly as possible and stop what is causing the damage to avoid it spreading to all of your hair.

Here are 8 simple ways to test for damaged hair

              1. Finger Test - run your fingers through your hair and feel the ends. If they feel rough and is sticking out then you most likely have hair damage.
              2. Split Ends - run you fingers through your hair and take a close look at the ends. If they look rough and stick out, or look split then you have damage.
              3. No Shine - most likely when your hair has no shine the cuticles are damaged. The cuticle is the outer protective layer for your hair. Some times there is no shine even after applying a deep conditioner. This is a good clue that you have cuticle damage.
              4. Dry Hair - in this case is seems no matter what products you try your hair seems to always look dry. The cuticle could be damaged and unable to hold in moisture
              5. Breakage - your hair brakes while styling. It may even break just by running your fingers through your hair. In this case the tensile strength is weakened due to cuticle damage. You hair will loose it's strength greatly if the outer layer is damaged.
              6. Tangled Hair - if you find your hair is getting tangled all the time you may have damage. The reason why is that the outer layer of the hair shaft are not smooth and as a result they catch each other and tend to get tangled. This makes it very hard to detangle.
              7. Stretching and Breaking - in this case your hair has no or very little elasticity. It can not stretch and ends up snapping.
              8. Frizzy - your hair shaft has been lifted due to chemical treatment, like coloring and the cuticle has been permanently lifted thus allowing moisture to be collected making the hair swell and look frizzy.

How can men repair damaged hair?

Remember your hair is dead. So there is nothing you can do to make it grow back together. The hair shaft is dead, so split ends for example can't grow back together again. But there are products that can help or make it look like you have less damage. And there are things you can do to prevent damage in the first place.

Here are 8 solid and simple hair care solutions for men's damaged hair.

              1. The first key solution is to identity damage as soon as you can. Once damage is done and its is really bad, like split ends, then the only real remedy is to trim off the damaged ends. What you can try is to get a hair cut in layers instead of getting a full cut. This way you might be able to get rid of just the damaged part. Get your hair is cut with a real sharp scissors giving you a nice clean cut. Now your hair has the chance to grow back out healthy.
              2. Try to avoid excessive heat and styling tools. Heat is an enemy to your hair and can easily damage your cuticle. But if you have to have heat make sure to use a good heat protectant spray.
              3. Let you hair dry naturally and do not vigorously rub with a cotton towel. Cotton micro fibers can catch your hair and pull it out or cause it to snap. If you have to use heat then try to use the lowest heat setting you can to set your style.
              4. Try to avoid coloring your hair. Chemicals are bad for your hair due to it makes your hair do things it was not originally made to do. Strong chemicals make your hair swell so that the dye can penetrate your outer layer or cuticle to reach the inner core. And as a result your hair never fully recovers. So the best thing is not to do it, but if you have to then use an ammonia free product and be sure to condition your hair before and after. Use a good deep conditioner. A deep conditioner have more concentrated amount of ingredients that generally does not wash off as easily as a regular daily conditioner. Therefore it stays on your hair longer.
              5. Stay away from shampoos that use sulfate and other harsh chemicals. Look for natural products. If you are reading the ingredients and there are a lot of long hard to pronounce word then look for another product. Most really harsh shampoos with chemicals strip way all your hair's natural oils leaving your hair dry. Another way to strip all the moisture out is to over shampoo. so be careful to only shampoo as needed.
              6. Use natural ingredients like coconut oil. Coconut oil is high in fatty acids that help form a protective layer or barrier around the cuticle. Oils like castor oil is high in protein and can help fill in the damaged spots.
              7. Protect you hair while doing regular activities like swimming. Make sure to use a swim cap and condition your hair before you swim. Conditioning your hair with coconut oil for example forms a protective layer around the cuticle thus helps protect your hair from chemical in the pool.
              8. Last but probably one of the most important is to live a healthy life style. Eat a balanced diet and try to keep your stress level to a minimum. Engage in regular exercise and make sure you are getting all the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs. If in doubt get a check up.

Dove Men+Care 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner

              Damaged hair men
Before you purchase this product you need to like menthol. The menthol in this shampoo really wakes you up. You can feel the menthol on your scalp as you shampoo. The added caffeine tightens up your skin.

              Damaged Hair Look Like
The reason why I like it is because it's an energizing blend of caffeine and menthol shampoo and conditioner that helps hair grow thicker, stronger, and more resilient. It's like a one stop shop that wakes you up and conditions your hair. It's quick and easy to use and you only need one product not separate shampoos and conditioners. And lastly it's at a good price for those wanting to save.

Head and Shoulders Shampoo and Conditioner 2 in 1, Anti Dandruff Treatment and Scalp Care, Charcoal for Men

Head and Shoulders Shampoo with Charcoal

I like it because it's a very convenient to use a 2 in 1 shampoo. Contains a charcoal extract which is nice at this price.

              Purify and restore scalp

The charcoal has natural abilities to clear away toxins and draw out the dirt and oils from your hair and scalp. It purifies and restores your scalp while nourishing your hair. It's another product that is quick and easy and at a good price.

V76 by Vaughn Hydrating Shampoo Moisture Rich Men's Formula for Dry Hair & Scalp

              man hydratant shampoo
The Sage leaf extract nourishes the scalp and strengthens your hair but has a fragrance. you are either going to like it or or not. Some folks just don't like it. I happen to like the smell and do not think it's overpowering. But that's my opinion. you Don't really need a a lot to do the job. Just a quarter sized amount in the palm of your hand should work nicely. The reason why I like it is because of the smell. Also contain vitamin E which is an antioxidant.

The product clams to contains no parabens or sulfates. It's also a vegan or vegetarian product. Not that I am going to eat it, but this fact may be important for some folks.

Did you know? Parabens is commonly used in a lot of health and beauty products mainly as a preservatives. It's in shampoos, toothpaste, deodorants and the list goes on. It also goes by other names such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben. All these ingredients contains parabens.
"The greatest concern is that parabens are known to disrupt hormone function, an effect that is linked to increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity,” reports the non-profit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC).

V76 by Vaughn hydrating shampoo is a little more expensive but you know your are getting a quality product and not being exposed to harsh chemicals or preservatives. Plus like I mentioned before I think it has a great scent so that's why I recommend it.

American Crew American Crew 3-in-1 33.8 Oz., 33.8 Oz

              Solutions for Damaged Hair
This is another product that has a great smell and uses Sage leaf extract. The Sage leaf adds shine to your hair and softens the skin. American Crew uses dimethicone to detangle and condition your hair. This also hydrates your skin. This product is a 3 in 1, Shampoo, body wash and conditioner. This keeps things super simple. All you need is one bottle. Now there are are a lot of good things to say about dimethicone but there are also some not so good. For some it may cause eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation. But in other studies it seems to help with dermatitis.

Why Dimethicone is Bad for Your Skin? The Truth Behind The Common Cosmetics Ingredient, Dimethicone, by Britta Aragon

That artificial coating on the outside of skin causes several issues:

              • It traps everything under it including bacteria, sebum, and impurities which could lead to increased breakouts and blackheads
              • The coating action actually prevents the skin from performing its normal activities like sweating, temperature regulating, sloughing off dead skin cells, etc.
              • Prolonged exposure to dimethicone can actually increase skin irritation, due to the coating property and because dimethicone is listed as a possible skin and eye irritant
              • Those with sensitive or reactive skin are at risk of an allergic reaction to dimethicone
              • On top of all this, dimethicone is a non-biodegradable chemical—bad for the environment The Truth Behind The Common Cosmetics Ingredient, Dimethicone

              American Crew

I have no problems using the product. It's very convenient being a 3-in-1 and does a great job. This one where you will have to try and see if the dimethicone bothers you. Many people will say that you are better off using natural ingredients rather than man-made ingredients to clean with. I recommend it because I think this is a great travel product. I only need to take one bottle to wash, shampoo and condition.

Head and Shoulders Shampoo, Anti Dandruff Treatment and Scalp Care, Royal Oils Collection with Coconut Oil, for Natural and Curly Hair, 13.5 fl oz

              Moisture Boot Shampoo
I like it because it's free of parabens and dyes and conditions and adds moisture to your hair. Don't be fooled by the anti dandruff label.

              Helps restore scalp health

This is also a great shampoo for those who do not have dandruff. The product gives you a lightweight, long-lasting hydration thus is a more balanced, moisturizing formula so it's not going to weigh down your hair. But on the other hand if you have an extreme problem with dry hair you may need to use a more concentrated (heavy) product.

Every Man Jack Daily Shampoo+Conditioner for All hair types, Sandalwood, 13.5 Fluid Ounce

              Shampoo plus conditioner
Here is why I love this product and I am willing to pay more. It's made naturally, they strive to use as many naturally derived and plant-based ingredients as possible, while still delivering exceptional performance. The product claims to contain no parabens, no phthalates, no dyes and no GMOs. Plus is made in the USA and is certified Cruelty Free by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Organization (PETA) and are never tested on animals. Now all that being said this product does contain Sodium Laurylglucosides.

Did you know: The trend of formulating without sulfates in the personal care industry has been present for almost a decade and has not decreased in popularity since its emergence. As a result, formulators are now requesting alternatives to the popular sulfates sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) from their raw material suppliers in order to meet the demands of consumers. Sodium Laurylglucosides Hydroxypropyl Sulfonate for Sulfate-free Formulations by Robert J. Coots, PhD

              Benefits

I happen to think it's a much milder, and much less harsh than a straight up sulfate. I have no problems using this product. The glycerin and shea butter will condition and soften your hair. I happen to like the Sandalwood scent the best.

Tea Tree Oil Shampoo for Men Women Teens with Itchy Dandruff and Dry Skin Sulfate Free Natural Anti Dandruff Shampoo Safe for Color Treated Hair with Rosemary Lavender Jojoba and Argan Oils (16 oz)

              Special formula shampoo
The reason I like this shampoo is NOT for it's anti dandruff claims and Tea Tree oil but for it's Lavender and Argan oils. The Lavender smells so good and the Argan oils infuse hydration while strengthening hair. I am not sure of the Tea Tree oil and it's ability to cure dandruff, anyway this article is not about dandruff. I think Tea Tree oil makes a good hand sanitizer. I think you'll like this product because it does a great job of shampooing your hair and providing back some of the moisture your hair as lost and it's sulfate free, paraben free, cruelty free and made in the USA.

Did you know? Tea tree oil comes from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a small tree native to Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. Tea tree oil has been used as a traditional medicine by Aborigines for centuries. These native Australians crush tea tree leaves to extract the oil, which is then inhaled to treat coughs and colds or applied directly to the skin for healing. 14 Everyday Uses for Tea Tree Oil, by Franziska Spritzler, RD, CDE

WOW Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo & Hair Conditioner Set - (2 x 16.9 Fl Oz / 500mL) - Increase Gloss, Hydration, Shine - Reduce Itchy Scalp, Dandruff & Frizz - No Parabens or Sulfates - All Hair Types

              WOW apple cider vinegar shampoo
Why I like it is because it contains virgin coconut and avocado oils to rejuvenate weak or damaged hair. The formulation of both oils replenish lost nutrition that's vital in keeping your hair strong. The coconut avocado hair conditioner is powered by botanical extracts and oils with nourishing properties. It works by balancing pH levels in weak or damaged hair.

              benefits
The interesting ingredient in this product is Saw Palmetto Extract. I am not recommending it because of it but just wanted to make note it's included. There are some studies that showed positive results for men hair loss treatment using Saw Palmetto. Saw palmetto is a small palm tree native to the southeastern United States. Its fruit was used medicinally by the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Did you know? Research is limited on Saw Palmetto’s efficacy in treating hair loss. One study showed positive results for men treated with topical saw palmetto and 10 percent trichogen veg complex. Nearly half of the 25 participants increased their hair count by 11.9 percent after four months of treatment. Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask and Deep Conditioner By Arvazallia for Dry or Damaged Hair - 8.45 Oz

Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask and Deep Conditioner By Arvazallia for Dry or Damaged Hair

The reason I recommend this product is it's a professional salon treatment that transforms the texture of your hair. It also repairs, restores, and strengthens weak, damaged, and over-processed hair. It give your hair a healthy look. They claim to use the highest quality cosmetic grade Argan oil. It also Sulfate and Paraben Free. So now you may be asking what is the difference between cosmetic grade Argan oil and regular Argan oil. The cosmetic grade is press where the regular Aragn oil is roasted. The result is the pressed is more potent.

              Aveda Men Pure-Formance Shampoo
What makes Aveda Men Pure-Formance unique is that it's made with 100% percent naturally derived exfoliate walnut shells and jojoba beads. This formula works to help create a smoother, healthier-looking and feeling scalp.

If you order it online it comes in a rather big bottle, 33.8 OZ so it's rather awkward to handle especially with one hand. But on the positive side the big bottle will last almost a year. The key is not to load up your hand but to only use a small amount. Unless you have have hair like a Lion all you need is the size of a Nickel in the palm of your hand.

Exfoliation can help your scalp. The idea behind using walnut shells is that the ultra fine walnut shells exfoliate dead surface skin cells without irritation. The jojoba beads also act as a gentle exfoliate. Exfoliation done regularly has many benefits:
              1. It can help clear and clean the scalp
              2. It can improve your skin texture
              3. It can clear the way for moisturizers and other hair-care products to reach your scalp

Did you know? Exfoliants (or abrasives) are compounds able to slough away the top layer of dead epidermis cells of the skin, thereby leaving the skin appear smoother, fresher and less wrinkled (peelings). The result of exfoliation is to promote blood circulation in the skin and to increase the turnover of surface skin cells. Exfoliation can be achieved either mechanically by scrubbing the skin with cleansers containing small, hard particles (scrubs) or also chemically by applying cleansers containing active ingredients with a peeling effect (e.g. alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids and others). HSI PROFESSIONAL Argan Oil Heat Protector | Protect up to 450º F from Flat Irons & Hot Blow Dry | Sulfate Free, Prevents Damage & Breakage | Made in the USA | 8 Ounce

HSI PROFESSIONAL Argan Oil Heat Protector | Protect up to 450º F from Flat Irons & Hot Blow Dry | Sulfate Free, Prevents Damage & Breakage | Made in the USA
The reason I put this on the list is because if you do a lot of blow drying or styling with heat you need a good heat protector and HSI works very well. It's going to protect your hair from heat exposure up to 450º F. and uses Argan oil. Argan oil is light weight so it's not going to weigh down your hair. No sticky mess or straw-like hair.

I love this product because it can also be used as a leave in conditioner. This product will help you with getting that smooth, hydrated, frizz-free hair that looks healthier than ever before. Plus is made in the USA and is not tested on animals.

PURA D'OR Original Gold Label Anti-Thinning Shampoo Clinically Tested, Infused with Argan Oil, Biotin & Natural Ingredients, Sulfate Free, All Hair Types, Men and Women, 16 Fl Oz

PURA D'OR Original Gold Label Anti-Thinning Shampoo Clinically Tested, Infused with Argan Oil, Biotin & Natural Ingredients, Sulfate Free, All Hair Types, Men and Women

I like this product because it uses what I think is an effective plant-based formula. It's a blend that claims is clinically proven and tested to reduce hair thinning by promoting hair strength and thickness along with increased volume and reduced breakage. When I read the list of ingredients each ingredient looks to be derived from a natural source.

Jack Black - Nourishing Hair and Scalp Conditioner, 10 fl oz - PureScience Formula, Deeply Moisturizing, Leaves Hair and Scalp Healthy and Hydrated, Proteins and Vitamins Included

Jack Black - Nourishing Hair and Scalp Conditioner, 10 fl oz - PureScience Formula, Deeply Moisturizing, Leaves Hair and Scalp Healthy and Hydrated, Proteins and Vitamins Included
Jack Black is a premium product so it is going to cost more than some of the more popular over the counter brands. But the good thing is that a small amount goes a long way in helping repair your hair. The best way to use this product is to put it on and then leave it on for a while, don't wash it off immediately. Give the product time to do it's work on your hair and scalp.

Jack Black is loaded with proteins, vitamins, and natural oils that work together to help reduce your itchy, dry scalp. The B5 vitamins are included and they help to retain moisture and thicken your hair. this gives added shine and volume to your hair. Biotin is an AB complex vitamin that is known to thicken and strengthen hair.

Did you know? Biotin, also called vitamin H (the H represents Haar und Haut, German words for "hair and skin") or vitamin B7, is a water-soluble B vitamin. It is involved in a wide range of metabolic processes, both in humans and in other organisms, primarily related to the utilization of fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids. Wikipedia

I like Jack Black because it's free of synthetic fragrances, colorants, and parabens. And in my opinion because of that fact it reduces the chances of it irritating your scalp.

Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser Split-End Bandage 4.2 Ounce (124ml) (2 Pack)

Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser Split-End Bandage

Like I mentioned previously in this article nothing is going to mend your split ends but I believe this product will help. After using it leaves you hair soft not stiff and straw-like so that's good. I have not seen this product around in stores so the only way to purchase may be to order online.

The key ingredient in this product looks to be phyto-keratin complex. And just so happens that your hair is made up of over 80% keratin. Keratin is in the family of proteins. The phyto part is the plant based version of keratin. So what we are talking about here is the use of a plant-based protein material. And just so happens that the most common suppliers of phyto-keratin are soy, wheat and corn. These natural ingredients are usually hydrolized before they are used.

The big benefit is that the phyto-keratin complex is to penetrate your hair and help retain moisture.

Peter Thomas Roth Mega Rich Shampoo, 8 Fluid Ounce

Peter Thomas Roth Mega Rich Shampoo
This is a luxury product but a little goes a long way. You can expect 8 oz to last a little longer than one month if you are not using too much. A dab in the palm of you hand is all you need if you have short hair. If you have longer hair then you are going to need more and 8 oz is not going to last one month.

This product uses a vitamin-infused shampoo to help nourish and give you a healthy looking head of hair. It's designed to be use in conjunction with the Mega-Rich conditioner. It leaves your hair soft and smooth. It uses Biotin B-7, vitamins C, E and B5.

              It's a 10 Haircare Miracle Leave-In product, 10 fl. oz.

              It's a 10 Haircare Miracle Leave-In product
It's a simple easy to use spray, just spay on and leave in, there is no reason to rinse out. If you are out in the sun a lot then you most likely are going to need UV protection. It's a 10 Hair-care contains Aloe Vera which is a moisture-based sealer and a natural sunscreen. Just wash your hair as normal and then apply It's a 10 Hair-care. It's as simple as that. This is probably one of the best leave in products on the market. If you have naturally oily hair you can skip the conditioner and use this instead.

Lab Series Lab Series Age Rescue+ Densifying Shampoo 200ml/6.7oz

Lab Series Lab Series Age Rescue+ Densifying Shampoo

It's a good all-around shampoo that leaves your hair looking much fuller and shiny. It is on the expensive side but a little goes a long way. You can expect to get about a months use out of a 6.7 oz tube but you need to really watch how much your use. Start out with a very small amount in the palm of your hand and work in more as needed. Just remember you can always add in more.

This is a Ginseng-enriched shampoo. If you look at the ingredients it says this product contains ginseng root extract.
Did you know? Ginseng has been used for improving overall health. It has also been used to strengthen the immune system and help fight off stress and disease. There are different types of ginseng. Asian ginseng (from Chinese and Korean sources) has been used for unclear thinking, diabetes, and male erectile dysfunction. American ginseng has been used for diabetes and for reducing the risk of the common cold and flu. Siberian ginseng has been used for reducing the risk of colds and flu. WebMD

COLOR WOW Dream Coat Supernatural Spray

COLOR WOW Dream Coat Supernatural Spray
The big benefit of this product is it's ability to help moisture proof your hair. This then helps with frizz. So if you have a lot of frizz this is the go to product that can help. Dream coat covers each hair strand with an invisible waterproofing cloak that will last for up to 2 to 3 shampoos.

So if you hair is over-processed, maybe too much coloring going on and you have the case of the frizz this product can help tame the Lions head. As you well now color chemicals can make your hair more porous by degrading the tight outer cuticle layer of your hair. This allows moisture to penetrate your hair and as a result your hair frizzes. Dream Coat covers each hair strand with an invisible waterproofing coating that works as a heat-activated polymer works to compress, tighten and seal hair strands. This is a premium product and is expensive but it can last up to 3 shampooing.

Burt's Bees Avocado Butter Hair Treatment, 4.34 oz, 2 pk

Burt's Bees Avocado Butter Hair Treatment
This is possibly the shortest list of ingredients for a hair-care product I've ever seen. It's mainly consists of natural ingredients. The Avocado will give your hair the needed moisture while Olive and Almond Oil, Rosemary and Nettle Extracts help give your hair a beautifully glossy shine.

              Ingredients:
glycerin, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, avena sativa (oat) kernel protein, persea gratissima (avocado) oil, prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, lanolin, tocopherol, urtica dioica (nettle) leaf powder, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) powder, chlorophyll, fragrance. Olaplex Hair Perfector No 3 Repairing Treatment, 3.3 Fl Oz

Olaplex Hair Perfector No 3 Repairing Treatment

This not your ordinary at home hair conditioner. This is a concentrated treatment that strengthens the hair from within, reducing breakage and improving look and feel. You must start with clean hair. Do a comb through and then apply Olaplex and let it do it's work for 10 minutes. The manufacture says the longer you can leave it in the better, not sure how long is long. I would go by their recommendation of 10 minutes.

Hairgenics Pronexa Hair Bonder Bond Repairing Complex for Damaged and Treated Hair. 4 FL OZ Provides 8 full treatments

Hairgenics Pronexa Hair Bonder Bond Repairing Complex for Damaged and Treated Hair. 4 FL OZ Provides 8 full treatments

If you have gone through  many harsh chemical or heat treatments then this product may be for you. In many cases, Pronexa Bond Repair will help strengthen and condition your hair to a level greater than what you currently have. The manufacture suggests you leave it on your hair for at least 15 minutes before washing out. In addition it can even be left on overnight for very damaged hair.

What I like about it is that it's cruelty free, paraben, sulfate and phthalate free. It is made in the USA. This will not get rid of your split ends but will help and possibly keep your hair from further damage.

              Conclusion for damaged hair

There are hundreds of shampoos and hair-care product on the market today with  anew ones being created as you read this article. You never know how some of these products will react on your hair.

So the best advise I can give you is not to jump in and use the product all over your head but to first do a hair strand test. Apply a small amount to a small part of your head or hair and see the results. Proceed slowly and carefully and gradually apply more and to a larger area as you see fit.

All prices and ingredients listed in this article are accurate as of the original posting date. Please be sure to visit the manufactures website to get the latest product information. Some of the ingredients may not agree with you or you may not agree with their testing.
