Boar bristle brushes for men made in Germany

Readers of this article and myself would love to hear your comments. What is your favorite brush and why do you like it? Please comment below.
The major factor in determining brush type is the density of bristles. Bristle density also helps in determining it's purpose. Based on bristle density and shape (round or concave) you have the following types of brushes:
  1. Vent brush
  2. Round brush
  3. Paddle brush
  4. Teasing brush
  5. The Wet Brush - Does the wet brush work on dry hair and Is the wet brush good for your hair

1. Zilberhaar Basic Beard Brush Kit (Soft Version) 2nd Cut Boar Bristles

Beard boar brush for men
2nd cut boar bristles!!! If you want a 1st cut which is much stiffer then click here. This is a kit where you get a regular beard brush and pocket brush and a brush cleaner tool. This kit is the ideal gift for any beard grower, with a regular beard brush for morning routing and a pocket beard brush for the car, office or travel set. Add the steel cleaning brush to keep your brushes in perfect condition for a long time.

This brush is made from 100% pure boar bristles and European pear wood by master craftsmen in Germany. These unique and natural products have been designed to feel great in your hand and skin.

This is a soft boar bristle brush pictured. Zilberhaar also makes a stiff bristle version of this same kit. The soft version is not going to have the penetration needed for thick hair. Depending on your hair type you may need the stiffer kit to get good penetration. Made from the second cut of the boar bristle, these slightly thinner bristles are especially good for first-time users or people with sensitive skin.

Packaged in a black box and black foam protected. A great experience of gift that will surely give a lasting impression.

The brush is made of Pear wood that is used to carve out a single block of wood. The wood is grown in Austria in the Black Forest. Each tree taken is replaced via sustainable forests. The wood handles are then carved from a single block of wood and sanded to a smooth finish, first by machine with pebbles and finished by hand to get every part right. By making the brush from a single block of wood gives it strength and should be much stronger than 2 piece plastic handles. This allows you to use more tension while brushing linger hair.

Zilberhaar Brush Kit

This is important to note that a brush shaped out of a single piece of wood is going to be much better for the environment because there are no VOCs, glue or other chemicals needed to piece the wood together. The handle is one solid piece of wood not many tiny pieces glued together. VOCs, are known as Volatile Organic Compounds, and are a class of super-powered carbon-based chemicals. They can quickly evaporate into the atmosphere at room temperature, and they sit there and wait for someone to inhale them.

I like this kit because it's reasonably priced, good quality and you get a beard brush and a hairbrush together which makes a great gift. The only decision you have to make is to make sure you get the right firmness. The firm or first cut bristles are going to much better for thick and longer hair because you get much better penetration. The softer or second cut boar is going to better for people who have thin or short hair. Less penetration is needed. Zilberhaar is based out of France but imports brushes manufactured in Germany.

2. Zeus Palm Military Style 100% Soft Boar Bristle Beard Brush Set

Zeus Palm Military Style 100% Soft Boar Bristle Beard Brush Set

This is a 100% boar bristle palm style brush. It comes in two versions a stiff or fist cut and a soft or second cut. For thin hair you are going to want the soft or second cut and for thick hair where more penetration is needed you are going to want to get the first cut or stiff version. The Zeus Military
Style Palm Brush is available in two distinct stiffness. First cut boar bristles are a strong brush, perfect for lengthy, thick or dense beards. Second-cut boar bristles are thinner and more appropriate for smaller, medium-length beards.

Zeus Military Brush

Comes with a cleaning tool and a very nice black tin box. Artfully designed brush made of the best materials in Germany. I like a military style brush because it's compact. There is no handle so it's perfect to throw in a travel bag. The biggest problem with most military brushes is that finger indention are needed to properly grip the brush. I have seen many cheaper brushes without intentions and it's all most impossible to get a good grip while brushing through your hair. But this one has the right depth cut into each side of the brush thus giving you perfect finger indentations. This allows the brush to sit perfectly in your hand. Most higher quality military brushes are going to cost upwards of $40.00 and this one is no exception.

3. 100% Pure Calcutta Wild Boar Bristle Hair Brush, Butterfly Engraving

100% Pure Calcutta Wild Boar Bristle Hair Brush, Butterfly Engraving

Desert Breeze Distributing is offering 2 versions of this brush and you should choose the version that is going to be the best for your hair type. There is a PW1 and a Calcutta version, with the Calcutta version featuring much stiffer bristles. Also the Calcutta has longer bristles for better penetration. To check price on the Calcutta click here.

Calcutta bristles are very stiff and come from a different wild boar species raised in the high country of India. This high quality brush is recommended for those with medium thick hair. The Indian boar or Sus scrofa critatus is native to India, Nepal, Burma, Thailand and Sri Lanka. It has a much larger mane than it's European counter part. The main on the Indian boar runs along the top of it's head all the way down to it's lower body. It's tail is also more tuffed bristles.

PW1 is softer than the Calcutta and I recommend for thin hair. It's not going to have the penetration of the Calcutta and will feel much better on your scalp.

The brush has 100% boar bristles and no nylon.

The handle of this beautifully crafted brush is made from oiled pear wood, grown locally in Germany.

The wood has an engraved butterfly image that represents nature's gentle and transforming powers.

Crafted at a family shop in Germany's Black Forest, which has been making high-quality hairbrushes for over 100 years.I like the solid wooden handle. It's nice and smooth and finished with an oil finish which serves are a great protection for the handle. give the brush a nice natural looking wear after several years and can be re oiled if needed. The brush feels great in your hand and very well balanced. the minute you pick up the brush you know it's something you will want to use to brush your hair with. It has that quality feel. It's well crafted and a pleasure to use.

The real test is going to be when you get the brush and feel the bristles. They may be too stiff or may be too soft. It's really a personal preference. There are general guidelines like thick hair will need a stiff brush and thin hair will need a softer brush but in the end you are just going to have to see it in person for yourself.

As a man you always want your brush to work with your hair and not against you. Once good advise is to choose a brush that is based on your hair length. Paddle brushes are great if you have long hair. It covers more hair with each brush. Vent brushes are great if you have thick curly hair. And to detangle hair I recommend The Wet Brush.

4. Fendrihan Men's Hairbrush Pure Boar Bristle with Real Olivewood Handle

Fendrihan Men's Hairbrush Pure Boar Bristle with Real Olivewood Handle 7 Inches

What I like is its' made in the Black Forest region of Germany with Olivewood of high quality. The brush is approximately 7 inches in length which is a perfect size. Olivewood is a very hardy wood and mainly farmed from trees growing in and around the eastern coasts of the Mediterranean. The wood is very strong so it makes a great brush handle. It does however have a high sensitivity to the elements so you are going to want to not let it soak in water and to take care of the wood. While working with the wood, sanding etc. it has a very distinctive fresh fruity smell. It also has a very nice grain and texture. Because the tree branches grow in a very strange and twisting way it make getting large pieces of lumber very difficult. However it's perfect for smaller pieces like handles for brushes.

Olivewood is regarded as a high end wood therefore is predominately reserved for higher end objects and expensive indoor furniture. Most handles are kiln dried, it's hard to dry and therefore lends itself to warping. It lacks natural oils so it can rot if not treated. As you can see from the picture above the brush handle has a strikingly rich color and grain pattern which in my opinion makes for a perfect and beautiful brush.

The bristles are 3/4 of an inch long and are medium hard. You can use it for your beard if you do not have coarse hair. But it's design is not intended for use as a beard brush. It features a 8 row design.

It has a very nice wood handle, a bit on the smaller side for my personal taste but very nice none the less. The wood grains look very nice. You can tell a lot of craftsmanship went into the make if this brush.

This is also good for any women who has medium to long thin hair type who wants a high quality brush made in Germany.

5. Fendrihan Men's Oval Hairbrush Pure Bristle with Real Olivewood Handle

Fendrihan Men's Oval Hairbrush Pure Bristle with Real Olivewood Handle

Nice handle that's comfortable in the hand. It's not too short. Beautiful Olivewood handle with natural wood grains. Length of brush is 8.6 inches. It;s a medium to full size brush.

100% boar bristles in 9 rows. Recommend for long, thick fine hair.

Good for men or women. Says men but it's not gender specific.

I like the exquisite German craftsmanship, nice Olivewood handle with beautiful grains. The oval shape is going to be a real good shape for both longer hair and short hair. It's like a good all around tool that can be used for both hair types. the handle feels very comfortable in the hand mainly because of it's shape. At the base of the handle, right where the bristles start the handle has a relief cut perfectly for your thumb. This allows you to get a very comfortable grip. In addition, attention to detail is in the handle cut. It's not perfectly round but has a small flat plain. This allows your fingers to get a very good grip, much better than if the handle was just round.

6. Fendrihan Genuine Boar Bristle and Pear Wood Military Hair Brush

Fendrihan Genuine Boar Bristle and Pear Wood Military Hair Brush

Fendrihan specializes in high-quality products with a respected reputation.

This is a pear wood military style brush with medium stiff bristles. It's 100% boar bristles. It has an indented handle for a very comfortable grip.

I recommend this brush for folks who have short thick hair due to the bristles are are medium stiff and they are 3/4 of an inch long. I do not recommend for long hair or thin hair. These bristles are not going to flex as much like softer bristles would. For thin hair you want the soft bristle version as described below.

Did you know many boar bristles brushes are made in Todtnau Germany? Many are made in the same factory. For example Zeus, Shash and many others are made in Todtnau.

More about Thermowood

The main advantage of using thermowood is that the manufacturer can use softer woods that otherwise are unusable. And swelling and shrinkage is greatly reduced. The biggest disadvantage is that after the process the wood could lose up to 30 percent of it's strength.

"Thermo-treated wood is a new generation of wood products. This blends unique properties such as water repellency, temperature resistance and dimensional stability. A beautiful brown tint and natural wood grain, along with these new properties, make this material an environmentally friendly alternative to chemically treated wood."

Why switch to a Boar Bristle Brush?

A boar bristle brush distributes the natural oils of your hair away from your roots and down to the ends of your hair, hydrating and coating the hair in your scalps protective oils. The result is roots that no longer look oily but instead look much healthier and of course frizz-free hair.

How To Clean a Boar Bristle Brush?

Because boar bristle brushes distributes your natural oils throughout the rest of your hair from your scalp, they will need to be cleaned occasionally. When it's time to clean your boar bristle brush, you can tell because bristles will begin to look grey and dusty. More on how to clean a brush.

  1. First run a fine toothed comb along the edges of the brush to clean the bristles, starting from the bristles base to the ends to loosen the brush's hair.
  2. Then drag the comb through the brush until you have removed all or most of the hair and excess sebum.
  3. Prepare a warm water bath and a dollop of sulfate-free shampoo or soft soap in a container that allows you to soak the bristles without submerging the rest of the brush.
  4.  Let the brush soak for approximately 10 minutes.
  5. Then rinse the cold water bristles.
  6. Use a towel to remove any excess water and allow the boar bristle brush to dry completely before reuse.

A well-made hairbrush can last for years. Hairbrushes with natural boar bristles have been preferred for centuries. German hairbrushes are carefully handcrafted to provide years of satisfying use. Most are made from non-endangered woods , beautifully durable and smooth to the touch.

While creating this list these were the well known high quality made in Germany brushes I am familiar with. If there are other high quality German made brushes that I missed please say so in the comments below. Would love to get your feedback.

  1. You really can’t go wrong with a good boar brush. Nothing makes your hair shine like brushing with a boar brush. I bought one years ago and it still does the job, I use it every day. If you take care of it a good quality boar brush will last forever!

  3. Thanks for your comment. Yes, I agree, regular brushing will definitely enhance you overall appearance. In addition, it promotes healthy hair by taking your hair’s natural oils located at the roots and distributes it all along your hair shaft. These natural oils act as a hair conditioner making your hair shiny and stronger. Back in the old days before hair care products were invented this is how people conditioned their hair with boar bristles brushes. They used the daily brushing method.

If you are man this method can work for you as well. By using any of the boar bristles for men mentioned in this article you can distribute your natural oils and have healthy hair too. I hope you found this list of boar brushes made in Germany helpful. For the price, all of them are really good as most things many in Germany are known for having a high level of quality and craftsmanship.

Just remember it’s important to note, once you hair has reached it’s shiniest state it’s no longer necessary to continue brushing. So you may not have to brush your hair 100 strokes in the morning and also 100 strokes in the evening. You can brush until you think you have reached a point where there is no longer any benefit.

The biggest benefit of brushing you hair with a boar bristle brush is adding shine and conditioning when styling products are not an option. So if you are planning to use conditioning products then you may want to reconsider how often you brush using a boar bristle brush. It does not hurt to brush, just realize the benefits will be less.
