Why does my hair get static when I brush it?

What causes hair static?

When two objects rub against each other, static electricity is created. This process results in the transfer of electrons from one object to the other. The object losing electrons receives a positive charge while the object receiving electrons receives a negative charge. For example, take hat hair. If your hat's material rubs against your hair strands, they swap electrons. This swap makes your hair build up with a kind of electric charge. If humidity exists in the air, the charge usually disappears.

It's common in the winter time due to the lack of moisture indoors. With the heaters working to pump in hot air that has little or no moisture the conditions are perfect for the creation of fly-a-away hair.
