Top Boar Bristle Brush Picks Research Results

Round Brush Research Summary

If you are looking for a round brush from my experience the Sam Villa Bamboo Boar Bristle Round Brush is my first choice. Unlike Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Speed Hair Brush the Sam Villa Bamboo Boar Bristle Round Brush has a wooden handle as compared to a plastic handle. In my experience a wooden handle is not prone to break as sometimes two piece plastic handles do. My second choice is the Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Speed Hair Brush due to it performs excellent for a round brush in this price category.
The Sam Villa Bamboo Boar Bristle Brush has a nice bamboo handle with an outstanding grip. The combination of boar and nylon bristles gives you the right amount of tension to style you hair perfectly every time. I can't say enough good things about this hairbrush.

A popular question people are asking is can you damage your hair using a boar brush. If you are interested in this topic then I would like to refer you to my outstanding article called: Do boar bristle brushes damage hair? In this article I answer this question plus 4 other popular questions on the topic of boar brushes and hair damage you will want to read.

Oval Brush Research Summary

If you need an oval brush according to most folks the Wet Brush Shine Enhancer Hair Brush is better than the Boar Bristle Hair Brush by Dovahlia or even the other more expensive brush. If you are on a budget consider the Wet Brush Shine Enhancer Hair Brush. You just can't beat the price. Note the Wet Brush Shine Enhancer Hair Brush is not exactly an oval shape but for the price and performance it's still the best.
The next one on my list is an oval boar brush made by Dovahia. This brush has a real nice solid wooden handle. Plus it comes with a very nice looking wooden comb. The comb can be used to help you clean the boar brush or used as a comb. For the price you get excellent craftsmanship and value.

Third on my list is the Mason Pearson oval boar brush. This brush comes in third only because of price. This is the Cadillac of brushes. Yes, it is expensive as compared to other brushes but the price is the only Con. Everything about the brush is superb. The premium rubber cushion flexes as your hair runs through the 100% boar bristles with no snags. Smooth as butter. The brush comes in different bristles so you will have to make sure you get the right one for your hair type. Generally, if you have thick hair you are going to want a stiffer bristle. If you have thin hair you are going to want a softer bristle. So before shelling out over $200 you should know what you are buying.

If you are a man and looking for the perfect boar brush or a women who is looking to purchase a boar brush for a man then you will want to read my article called: Boar bristles brushes for men made in Germany. In this article I review a whopping number of brushes, 18 boar brushes for men and give you my in-depth opinions.

Oval boar brushes are great for long hair but a little weak on the styling side. Using an oval boar brush you are going to be able to brush through short, medium and long hair with ease. It's going to give you that natural shine you have been looking for. But it's not going to be the best for adding curls, bounce and volume so that's why my first choice is a round brush. A round boar brush gives you a lot of versatility. You can easily add curls, add more volume to the top or even add a bouncing side curl. And it also adds shine because it's a has boar bristles. You really can't go wrong with a round boar brush.

Hey, don't forget to check out my article called: Are boar bristle brushes made from boars? This is a great question and you might be surprised what boar bristles are really made of and why it's recommend by so many stylist. Plus you will understand that not all boar bristles are created equal. Learn the differences.

You are going to want to have a styling brush, round boar brush and a brushing brush, oval boar brush. Both have unique features that perform differently. A round brush is going to allow to style your hair while the oval brush will give you shine and condition your hair when brushing. In addition you may want to have a few different sizes of round brushes, small, medium and large. This gives you control of the size of your curl and bounce.

There are a lot of brushes on the list that are good but they fall to pieces because of their plastic handles. Plastic handles generally comes in two flavors. A one piece handle and a two piece handle. And as you may have guessed a two piece plastic handle is going to break. Put a little tension on the handle and it usually snaps over time. A one piece usually does the same thing but takes a little longer. So the bottom line is I am not going to pay a bunch of money for a plastic handle boar brush.

Revlon and Wet Brush are fantastic brushes but the plastic handle kills it. If they had a nice wooden handle and upped the price a little to cover the cost they would be a fantastic boar brushes.

The Pearson cleaning brush is shown above

  1. Take a close look at the hole where the bristles meet up with the face or head of the brush. As you will notice there is a nice smooth hole. On cheaper brushes this hole will be inconsistent and may even contain burs that can snag and snap your hair causing split-ends.

Where do the best boar bristles come from?

Natural bristle brushes come from a special boar breed bred solely for its bristles. The bristles are collected carefully using a procedure similar to the techniques used in shearing sheep. The boar is exceptionally well cared for; their bristles are regularly harvested over their long lifespan.

Let's talk about some of the best boar brushes on the market. The line-up of brushes below are all really pretty good. So with that being said you really can't go wrong with any of them on my list. Some of the brushes I had to get really picky to find a Con.

Have you ever ask the question is boar brushes are vegan? Well if you want to know read my article called: Are boar bristles brushes vegan? In this article I answer the question plus give you some of my top pick for vegan brushes.

Best tips on how to use a boar bristle brush

12 hair brushing tips everyone should know! - HairBrushy YouTube Video
  • I recommend avoiding wet hair brushing because it can cause hair breakage.
  • Detangle hair with a wide-teeth comb. Boar bristle brushes are not for detangling. Start at tips and detangle working toward the roots using a detangling comb or brush.
  • Make sure that you brush from root to tip when adding shine to your hair. To do this, first, bend the waist forward and flip over the hair. Start to brush (using a boar brush) from your neck's nape to the end of your hair. This spreads the sebum to the end of the hair.
  • Brush in sections. If you have long and full hair, sectioning your hair will help. You can clip a part of your hair and work each section separately.
  • Twice a day, brush. Before going to bed, we strongly recommend to brush 2 - 5 min. Each stroke should be the whole hair length.
  • Regularly clean your brush. To clean the bristles, you can a comb to remove the hair and wet cloth.

Best cleaning advice for boar bristle hair brushes

  1. Prepare warm water in a jar with a little shampoo
  2. Use a wide - tooth wooden comb or your hand to remove hair from your brush.
  3. Place the brush with the water on the bristles. Don't completely submerge the brush in water. Let it soak for 10 minutes in water.
  4. Remove the brush from the container.
  5. To rinse the brush, change the water. To rinse, use cold water.
  6. Let the brush dry with the bristles on a clean towel. Run your fingers a couple of times across the bristles to flick off any excess water.
  7. Make sure the water on the handle is cleaned. Depending on the amount of water in the cushion part of the brush, it may take a few hours or all day to dry.

What makes the best boar bristles first cut or second cut?

Look for a boar brush which has "First Cut" boar bristles when choosing a boar brush. First cut bristles are extracted from the bristle root or bulb end. First cut boar brushes are more expensive and desirable, since the bristle's bulb end is thicker and has better penetration. Brushes of the first cut boar have stiffer bristles. For their premium products, many producers reserve first cuts. Ensure that the bristles are long enough to penetrate your scalp, too. It is essential to have a long enough bristle to massage your scalp to stimulate the release of a beneficial oil called sebum for the hair conditioning.

Which is better a boar brush or a nylon bristle brush?

Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, but you will need maximum penetration if you have really thick or curly hair. The penetration you require may not be provided by a boar bristle brush alone. A boar and nylon combination brush are also made by manufacturers. You can get the extra penetration you need to reach your scalp by a really stiff First Cut boar along with nylon. The mix gives you almost all the advantages of using an all-boar bristle brush. It's important to reach your scalp to be effective in spreading your natural oils all over your hair.

The reason why boars are so efficient is that they're like your own hair. Boar just like a human hair, has tiny scales. These tiny scales are really good at gathering natural oils from your scalps and spreading them from the roots to the tips of your hair. Therefore nylon is much smoother and not as effective as boar.

The "First Cut" is the most demanding and expensive. Most producers use "Second" or "Third Cuts" because they are smoother and suitable for thin or thin hair. The second or third cut will be cheaper and softer than the first cut. First cutting is more expensive and desirable, because the bristle's bulb end is thicker and has better penetration. For their premium products, many producers reserve first cuts.

How much should you send on a boar bristle brush?

Don't be afraid to spend a good , high quality brush on some money. Just think about all the money you'll spend in a year on hair products. A can that adds up over time, at $10 to $12. So it's not a bad tactic to spend more on a brush. Moreover your brush will last with proper care for 10, 20 or more years. When was the last time your hair care products were purchased, and it lasted for 20 years? I have some, honestly, but these were bad products that I ended up not using. So they sat for years in the drawer at the bathroom before I threw them into the trash. So if your buy in to this approach spending $200 on a very good boar bristle brush is not bad at all and works out in the end to be reasonable. Buy a good quality hair brush and it will last a very long time.
